When you are connected to the Internet, you are literally ON THE INTERNET. In other words, other computers have the ability to detect the presense of your computer, and if you have no firewall, they can put things on your computer like viruses, trojans, credit card stealing software, etc.

So is having a firewall important? Yes! Critically important!
